The Pike's Peak Writer's Conference was awesome. I had a great time and met a lot of great people. Excellent classes and I got to sit and talk with horror writer extraordinaire Dan Simmons. My good friend and writing buddy, Mark Ortler came along and made some good contacts. I highly recommend the conference and you should all try to make the 2007 conference.

Colorado School Stabbing Feb 1, 2008

knightI read a terrible story from a theology page I visit sometimes called TOL (theologyonline.com ). Here’s the article:

When I was in public school getting stabbed in the back had a whole different meaning.

LONGMONT – Police say a 14-year-old boy attacked a 14-year-old girl with a pair of scissors at Silver Creek High School on Thursday morning.

Longmont Police say it happened around 10:30 a.m. in an upstairs hallway during a passing period between classes.

According to police, as the girl was trying to get into her locker, the boy came up behind her and started stabbing her in the upper back.

She then ran away as he chased her down the crowded hallway and kept stabbing her. At the end of the hallway, police say the girl collapsed. The boy ran from the hallway but was arrested by a school resource officer.

The girl was taken to Longmont United Hospital for seven separate stab wounds, six in the upper back and one in the left arm. Doctors say all the wounds were found to be non-life threatening.

Police say there is no indication the victim knew the boy or there were any issues or exchanges between the two.

The boy has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

9NEWS has chosen not to release his name because he is a juvenile.

The communications manager for the St. Vrain School District called the incident "tragic."

Classes went on as planned but some parents did pick up their children and take them home.

This story really bothers me. What is our country coming to? Fourteen-year old girls being stabbed in school? School shootings happening two, three, maybe four times a year?

Terrible. The Bible says The Law is the great teacher, unfortunately our laws don’t teach much. It takes months, or years for a crime to come to trial. Plea bargains are the order of the day. I especially hate plea bargains. They are used to make innocent people accept guilt, and for guilty people to get off easy.

How awful for the people involved in this senseless stabbing. If our Law taught as it is supposed to, it could have saved so much hurt. Think of the girl and her parents. Then think of the boy and his parents. So much pain. Lives changed forever.

In our country’s foolish attempts to show mercy to the guilty, we cause so many more to become guilty.

There are three forms of punishment sanctioned in the Bible; capitol punishment (mandated for eight crimes), corporal punishment, and financial restitution (a combination of corporal punishment and financial restitution are often needed).

Prisons have proven to be at best, inefficient and more often, breeding grounds for more violent and deadly criminals.

I fear for America, but I don’t think it is too late. We still have the power to change, to become better. To protect our children and return to a more Godly lifestyle.kids

Someday I hope to have grandchildren and I’d like for them to be able to play and learn without the fear of a little boy stabbing them, or of some pedophile taking them.

Sorry. I’ll hop off the soapbox now.
